The Feel-Good Benefits of Adding a Water Feature to Your Denver Outdoor Living Space

August 17, 2016

If you think for a moment, you will realize that people naturally sit and congregate more often near fountains, waterfalls and moving water – that's because humans are naturally attracted to moving water. There is nothing more relaxing than settling down and listening to the sound of a soothing water feature in your Denver outdoor living space.

Whether it's a dramatic waterfall or a soft gurgle, water features work their magic by providing a focal point, health benefits, and delightful background sounds that cover unwanted noise. Water features can transform a deck, your backyard, your mood, and your health. A water feature is any of a full range of fountains, containers, pools, ponds, cascades, waterfalls, riverbeds, and streams in landscape architecture, on decks, and in garden design.

Water – especially moving water – produces negative ions. What are ions? They are electrically charged atoms and molecules. Atoms and molecules become positively or negatively charged continuously, as part of the chemical reactions that keep us alive. There's nothing wrong or unusual about this. The only thing that can bother us is when there are too many positively charged (versus negatively charged) particles in our bodies and/or environments.

As early as the 18th century Horace-Benedict de Saussure built a measuring device to show the amount of negative ions generated by water in places like forests, mountains, and near waterfalls.

Dr. Albert P. Krueger, at the University of California, studied the effects of negatively charged particles on human health and wellbeing. His research showed that negatively charged (ionized) air has a direct relation to the levels of serotonin (a neuro-hormone) in the blood, thus having a great effect on altering the mood. Serotonin is the "feel good" chemical that, when present in sufficient amounts, allows us to relax and know that all is well.

In 1981, The New York Times reported on research that showed how humans are negatively affected by a positively charged environment, such as that produced by wind. In their post, Ions Created by Winds May Prompt Changes in Emotional States, they site experiments described by Dr. Jonathan M. Charry of Rockefeller University and Dr. Frank B.W. Hawkinshire of N.Y.U. in an issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, stating:  "The apparent effects of positive ions included increased tension and irritability as well as a slowing of reaction times."
In nature, beneficial negative ions are released by:
  • Summer rains
  • Water waves or flowing water
  • Falling waters
  • Sunny weather
  • Water evaporation produced by plants
  • Photosynthesis
  • Fresh Snow

But even if you are not building a new home, we can assist you with your outdoor living space design to bring the indoors out in order to provide a welcome extension to your space with all the comforts and luxuries you have come to expect of indoor living.

Pergola Shade
Pergolas keep family and friends cool all season long while providing the framework and sense of enclosure for this outdoor room. Screens can be added for morning or afternoon sun protection and further privacy. The ability to integrate fans, misters, lighting or any other electrical features like speakers, allows for complete customization unique to your private space. The utilization of patio heaters also extends its season of use.

Fire Pit
Because of the cozy warmth and light produced, your fire pit can be the focal point to any outdoor space and extends the use of your outdoor room into the cool season and cool evenings. Spend quality time huddled near the warmth or cuddled up on comfy outdoor furniture.

Integrated lighting, especially low voltage LEDs, provides an efficient glow creating a stunning setting for your evening gatherings. Illumination of your outdoor space will add drama and personality, allowing for continued use into the night.

Outdoor Kitchen
Outdoor kitchens now provide a wide range of modern amenities – including stainless steel sinks, refrigerators, grills, pizza ovens, etc. The only thing better than a home cooked meal is a home cooked meal prepared in a fully equipped outdoor kitchen. Entertaining friends and family during meal prep and while cooking just got fun – and a whole lot more versatile.

Interior Luxury
We can help you easily improve the quality of your outdoor design with modern technology, because popular accessories for outdoor rooms now include outdoor speaker systems and TVs. Including music for your outdoor room is great for added ambiance. And don’t miss the next pool party when the big game is on. Denver Bathroom Remodeling: Top Three Trends

April 1, 2016

Spring is the perfect time to make upgrades to your home. When it comes to your Denver bathroom remodel, it can provide several benefits to your home and space. In addition to creating a new space that is more accommodating to you and your family’s needs, updating your bathroom also increases the value of your home. Below are some of the latest trends for you to consider for your bathroom remodel!

  1. Multi-Functional Showers: Who says a shower just has to include a faucet and a showerhead? Homeowners are taking the shower experience to the next level to create a more enjoyable environment. High-tech gadgets such as built-in speakers and in-room televisions are gaining in popularity as well. While some people enjoy the silence of the shower, for others it is a great way to catch up on a show or listen to music or podcasts. Often times these features have easy to use built-in controls. On the other end of the spectrum are those who want to create a serene, spa-like experience in their bathroom where they can relax and decompress. More people are installing steam shower heads, multiple shower heads and mood lighting to their remodeled bathrooms.

  2. Water Savings: A considerable amount of water used in the bathroom, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t help save on water expenses and usage. When working with a Denver contractor like Kona Contractors, feel free to ask us about different pieces you can install during the remodel process that will result in water and cost savings. For instance, a toilet with dual flush technology that uses different water capacities for flushing. You can also invest in a water efficient showerhead to save nearly 3,000 gallons of water each year. These types of shower years can adjust the gallons used, and some even have a “pause” feature that momentarily makes the water turn to a very low trickle. This feature is also helpful if you need to take a break from the water.

  3. Contemporary and Modern: Many are enjoying an alternative style for their bathroom and are choosing a contemporary route. From large tile flooring to granite backsplashes and shower walls, many are enjoying this modern look. This style is also neat, clean and simplistic. Plus, some of the colors and styles of granite are easy to clean and do not show imperfections as easily. When it comes to the color, light is definitely in. Many are choosing a mix of white and various shades of gray, blue or purple. From clear shower doors to simplistic handles and touch-free faucets, people are really enjoying the simplistic look. You can get over 200,000 contemporary bathroom ideas on the Houzz website.

7 High-ROI Ideas for Your Kitchen Remodel in Denver

January 28, 2016

Everyone loves a great kitchen and the value it brings to the home. If your kitchen could use a facelift, you’ll want to be sure that the changes you make will help maximize the money you spend by including a few must-haves like better ergonomics, increased storage, and even room for technology. So as you think about your kitchen this year, consider incorporating some of these kitchen remodeling trends to get a higher return on your investment:
  1. Gas & electric ranges – Many people debate about which is better: a gas or an electric cooktop. Fortunately, there doesn’t have to be a right answer anymore because manufacturers have started creating professional-quality ranges that include both electric and gas cooktops, so you can make the choice in the moment based on your cooking needs and preferences.
  2. High-tech appliances – Just like walking around with your smartphone, only these computers of the future live in your kitchen. That’s right: appliances like refrigerators are now computer-regulated, interactive, and multi-functional. There are even models coming to market that offer internet, TV/DVD, and email and messaging capabilities.
  3. Interesting countertops – Design is as important as functionality in a kitchen remodel, and countertops play a central role. Butcher block, marble slabs, mixing concrete with glass or metal, and soapstone continue to be popular, but if you’re looking for even more interest, think about other woods (like mahogany), engineered quartz, stainless steel, and concrete. And we’re not done at countertops. For kitchen cabinetry, check out these kitchen cabinet trends for 2016.
  4. Unique stove hoods – Stove hood design has stepped it up as well by leaving the boxiness of the past behind in favor of more rounded and sculptural stove hoods made from stainless steel or glass. Some even provide functional features such as built-in spice racks.
  5. Custom beverage centers – Wine refrigerators and coffee centers bring a level of luxury and style to any kitchen. Digitally controlled, built-in refrigeration units store both red and white wine at just the right temperature and humidity, whereas built-in coffee centers brew the perfect cup of coffee, cappuccino, or espresso while saving valuable counter space.
  6. Double-duty dishwashers –We’re interested in dishwashers that can accomplish two things at once: wash AND store dishes. The dishwashers of today can wash a whole load of dishes and store them when done—eliminating the need to unload the dishwasher and transfer plates, glasses, and cutlery to other cabinets. Some can even hold up to 20 place settings. And an added bonus is that they look like drawers on the outside, thus seamlessly blending into your cabinetry.
  7. Long-lasting lighting – Many homeowners are using LED lighting in their kitchens, not only because they come in a variety of colors, can be installed virtually anywhere, and emit almost no heat (so you don’t have to worry about burning cabinets or walls), but because they last 50,000 hours on average. No matter the trend, energy efficiency will never go out of style.

New Year, New Ideas: Kitchen Cabinet Trends for 2016

Whenever we embark on a Denver kitchen renovation here at Kona Contractors, our goal is twofold: to give you the kitchen of your dreams and to keep our eyes on what’s happening out there in the latest kitchen design. As the New Year gets off the ground, we went in search of the top kitchen cabinet trends to watch in 2016. Here are some of our favorites:

Keep it clean – If you’ve noticed how kitchen cabinets have become much more sleek and streamlined over the years, we’ve got news for you: the trend is not going away. Clean lines will continue to dominate cabinet design this year. And appliance manufacturers are getting in on the trend, too, by coming out with clever built-in appliances that cut down on bulk, create unobtrusive sight lines, and make for better traffic flow.

Shake it up – Shaker-style cabinets aren’t going anywhere either. Far from plain and boring, as they may have seemed in the past, the simplicity of these cabinets—with their square shape and recessed center—shows off the color and grain of wood beautifully. But if the natural look and feel of wood is not your cup of tea, this style also works well when painted (see below).

Go neutral – Complementing clean lines and premium-quality wood is a neutral color palette trend, such as white, gray, or earth tones. Using neutrals on your cabinetry creates a warm backdrop which frees you up to use color elsewhere in your kitchen, such as in a backsplash, on your countertops or floors, or even in brightly colored countertop appliances.

Add some glass - Glass panels in kitchen cabinets have been a recent trend in kitchen updates and new homes. Usually, homeowners go for a few chosen cabinets to install glass panels, not all (we all need to hide unorganized items sometimes). The cabinets are a great way to display pretty dishes, glassware, or collectibles. It also creates an overall fresh feel that makes the space look bigger.

Think horizontal – The widening of cabinets means there is less of a need to stack them vertically, which also creates a more pleasing sight line. In 2016, expect horizontal cabinetry to take center stage, housing anything you’d normally store in a vertical cabinet with the help of drawer inserts and other de-cluttering measures.

Take advantage of tech – Even in the kitchen, we’re not far from our devices. Cabinet designers are creating innovative ways to incorporate technology into the heart of the home, such as built-in charging stations and tablet holders, allowing us to keep up with our tech-focused lifestyles.

Make them personal – Whether you want custom or semi-custom cabinets, horizontal drawers or vertical cupboards, the biggest trend for 2016 is personalization. Cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all cabinets have fallen by the wayside as manufacturers continue to offer an ever-increasing variety of options to suit nearly every design taste and lifestyle demand. No matter what, the go-to response from kitchen designers is simply to select the cabinets that will best fit your needs.
